WHY FREE PLAY AND HOW IT INCORPORATES PLAY-BASED LEARning

Our Play-Based Learning Programs

Free play embodies play-based learning by integrating fun and engaging activities into a child's daily routine. Play-based learning is a pedagogical approach where children learn through play, which is essential for their development. Free play as a form of play-based learning involves a mix of physical activity, exploration, creativity, and social interaction.

ENGAGEMENT WITH ENVIRONMENT

Free play allows kids to interact with their environment, fostering a deep respect and engagement with the world around them. Whether playing in a park, a backyard, or indoors, children learn to navigate and appreciate their surroundings. This interaction promotes environmental awareness and a connection to nature.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Free play is particularly beneficial for social and emotional development. It provides a natural setting for children to develop social competencies and emotional regulation. For instance, children who engage in free play with peers report feeling happier, more confident, and better able to manage their emotions (PlaySciJournal) (GlobalChildDev).

PHYSICAL HEALTH BENEFITS

Free play is an excellent form of physical activity that enhances cardiovascular fitness, motor skills, and coordination. Studies have found that free play improves balance, agility, and overall physical fitness in children. It also contributes to better overall physical health by promoting active lifestyles and reducing sedentary behavior (PlaySciJournal).

MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS

Free play has been shown to improve self-esteem, reduce stress, and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. Play-based learning environments that encourage free play have demonstrated significant positive impacts on mental health. For example, children who engage in free play regularly report higher levels of self-confidence and better emotional regulation (ChildDevResearch) (PlaySciJournal).

INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY AWARENESS

Free play environments that are inclusive and diverse promote social integration and cultural awareness. These settings encourage children from different backgrounds to play together, fostering mutual respect and understanding. Inclusive play environments have shown significant benefits for children with disabilities, promoting physical fitness and enhancing social interactions (PlaySciJournal).
